Fractal FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Fractal technology?

Fractal is a quantum speed technology, delivering applications in 90 days or less, on current hardware, running from 1,000 to a million times faster than any current technology.

How does Fractal deliver its disruptive benefits?

Fractal uses conventional computer science with innovation around system design to reduce I/O to such a degree that applications run from 1,000 to a million times faster, reduce storage 90% or more, delivered in 90 days or less.

What hardware is needed for a Fractal application?

Fractal can run on any conventional computer. Fractal can run on a card, a chip or a traditional server, either on premise or in the cloud. Fractal delivers quantum speed without the need for special hardware.

Why is it called Fractal?

In science, a Fractal often describes repeating entities which aggregate from smaller entities into the same shape as the part. In some ways, that describes the characteristics of a Fractal distributed system.

What kind of applications are best fits for Fractal?

Fractal is an excellent solution where the application is performing repetitive tasks. Thus billing, forecasting, and about any current corporate application are a great fit. Fractal is particularly useful where data volumes exceed the current technology’s ability to either
run such volumes or to do so would be economically unjustifiable. Fractal is a great fit for applications which need to run much faster than they can on current hardware. For instance, an application taking 75 clock hours with a large data center can run in a few
minutes in a Fractal environment – without the need for the data center.

Does Fractal advance sustainability objectives?

Fractal is one of the first technologies that eliminates the need for large, energy-consuming data centers. Large data centers are an artifact of I/O production – something current relational technology produces. Because Fractal reduces I/O dramatically, the
need for energy-consuming data centers is dramatically reduced with Fractal.

How does Fractal impact application development?

Application development is turbo-charged with Fractal. Fractal does not require the relational model to underpin every application. Many applications suffer from being shoe-horned into a relational model. Fractal delivers any corporate or government
application that is I/O intensive in 90 days or less in full production. An application that takes 2-3 years with conventional technology can be delivered in Fractal, in 90 days or less, in full production.

What is a Fractal parallel system?

Fractal delivers legacy-system replacement via a parallel system. A Fractal parallel system can be built for 50% the cost of the current legacy system, delivered in 90 days or less, thus it makes sense to let customers use the Fractal parallel system side-by-side with the system it wants to replace. The two systems run for an acceptable period, then the customer can decide if they want to shut down the legacy system and harvest the savings.

Can Fractal help in edge-computing challenges?

One of the limitations of current edge-computing vendors is the necessity to have significant hardware at every edge point and a cloud in the center. Neither is needed in a Fractal edge deployment. The Fractal system can be on a card or tiny computer at the
edge and the aggregation of Fractal entities forms the entire edge system. There is no need for a central cloud – thus eliminating that latency. The cost of a Fractal edge system is half the cost with conventional technology – and the computing times run
from 1,000 to a million times faster.
